PhD Candidate – History Department, University of Warwick

My current research focus is the representation of twentieth-century American history in Rockstar Games, particularly the Red Dead series (2004-) and L.A. Noire (2011). Through explorations of the video games themselves (especially the relationship between gameplay and narrative), and analysis of their marketing materials and other paratextual promotional discourses, I consider the visible role of cultural history and genre cinema in interpreting and constructing these interactive visions of American society, sold as authentic experiences. My work then considers the implications of representing history using a genre lens (principally westerns and noir), particularly for the portrayal of historical others; namely women and people of colour.
